Training of stem shot variants for back position players – decision-making TU (28)
Description:
This training unit focuses on improving stem shots. Following warm-up, the players repeat different stem shot variants during the ball familiarization phase. After a shooting competition and the goalkeeper warm-up shooting, the players practice these shooting variants by playing against an inactive defense player before they practice making stem shot decisions by playing against a more active defense player. In a series of shots and another individual offense exercise, the players subsequently practice the different stem shot variants in various situations similar to the real game. Finally, they implement the shooting variants in a 3-on-3 game.
The training unit consists of the following key exercises:
- Warm-up/Stretching (individual exercise: 10 minutes/total time: 10 minutes)
- Ball familiarization (15/25)
- Shooting competitions (10/35)
- Goalkeeper warm-up shooting (10/45)
- Offense/Individual (15/60)
- Offense/Series of shots (10/70)
- Offense/Individual (10/80)
- Offense/Small groups (10/90)
Training unit total time: 90 minutes
Training unit requirements:

TU 28-1 Warm-up/Stretching (10/10)
Course:
- Each player has a handball.
- The players crisscross the field and make different running moves (forward, backward, sidestepping, hopping) while dribbling their ball.
- After about one minute, the coach gives the sign for the players to do the respective task below before they may start dribbling again:
→ One whistle: The players bounce the ball against the wall and catch it again five times.
→ Two whistles: The players bounce the ball against the wall, jump over the ball once it has bounced back, run after it, and finally pick it up.
→ Three whistles: The players make pairs, bounce their balls against the wall three times simultaneously, and then try to catch their teammate’s ball.
Afterwards, the players perform stretching/mobilization exercises together.
TU 28-2 Ball familiarization (15/25)
Setting:
- Put one medicine ball and one cone each next to the right and left side of the goal.
- Position one small vaulting box with a medicine ball and a cone on top inside the goal, next to each goalpost.
- Attach one hoop each in the upper corners of the goal; use a rope or tape.
- Define the shooting positions with two poles.
Course:
- The players make pairs and stand in two lines.
- Each player has a handball; the pairs keep passing their balls simultaneously, using different passing variants (A).
- After about 30 seconds, the coach whistles. This is the sign for
and shoots at the targets on the left, at the targets on the right), trying to hit one of them.-
and fetch their handballs and line up again on the respective other side.- As soon as the coach whistles again,
and start, and so on.- - The players should make a stem shot. In the first round, they have to shoot while keeping their arm above head level; in the second round they should shoot while keeping their arm at hip height. In the third round, the players should bend their hip sideways and shoot from next to the pole, on the side of their non-throwing hand (Upper body side-bent shot).
The players should make the shooting moves properly, speed does not matter here.
