This story was inspired by my wife Nina’s paintings of dugongs
after seeing Pig and Wuru at Sydney Aquarium, Australia.
Dedicated to every animal on planet Earthwhose very survival has, in some way,
been threatened by humans.

A dugong called ‘Brave Charlie D’ has a large family; three very big cousins and Aunt Sammie-Lee,then Grandpa and Grandma, his mum and his dad,
more aunties, some uncles and young cousin Brad.
He learned from his grandma to look for and see
all the beautiful creatures and plants of the sea.
While Grandpa taught maths, how to read and to spell,
and in physical tness, to strive and excel.
But Brave Charlie D always wanted much more, to travel the globe, see the world and explore,to learn humans’ language, their culture and skills,
to challenge himself and to look for new thrills.
So Charlie said ‘bye to his mum and his dad,his grandpa and grandma and young cousin Brad,his uncles and aunties, his large family,-
as well as his cousins and Aunt Sammie
Lee.
