When a country is ruled by a king or queen, that system is called a “monarchy”.
Monarchies in Europe were based on the notion that the royal families had been chosen by God to be the rulers.
They were considered inherently better than regular nobles and the nobles were in turn better than commoners. Marrying someone from the lower class meant losing status, most especially to the resulting children.
