Dedications
This textbook in equine toxicology is an extension of Blackwell’s Five Minute Veterinary Consult: Canine and Feline by Drs. Larry Tilley and Frank Smith. We are thankful for their foresight and wisdom in beginning this series and grateful to be a part of the stream with the first edition of this textbook.
The editors of this textbook would like to thank the authors whose dedication to toxicology and depth of knowledge helped make this book a reality. It would not have been possible without their donation of time and effort. A special thank you as well to the veterinary students who each day challenge us to become better at our respective jobs, whether it is teaching, industry, or private practice.
In fond remembrance of Dr Gary Osweiler, mentor and friend. I miss his wisdom, support and enthusiasm for toxicology. There are not enough words in the English language to adequately express my appreciation for my co‐editors, Dr Dionne Benson and Dr Bob Poppenga. Somehow “whew” and “you rock” don’t say nearly enough. To my colleagues at Pet Poison Helpline – a heartfelt thank you. Finally, to old friends, many gone but forever in my heart, and to Bob and Tyne, the cornerstones of my world.
Lynn R. Hovda
Thank you to each of my mentors – both human and horse. Especially Dr Lynn Hovda, Dr Rick Arthur, and Dr Mary Scollay. You have taught me and inspired me. To Oliver and Henry who taught me to fly – if only for a moment. And to my family, especially Paul, who singlehandedly makes our crazy life work.
Dionne Benson
I want to thank all of my veterinary toxicology colleagues for their enthusiasm and advocacy for and commitment to the specialty. It is a small but mutually supportive group which embraces a One Health approach to keeping animals, humans, and our environment healthy. A special thanks to those veterinary toxicology trailblazers who, over the years, influenced me and confirmed that I made the right career choice.
Robert H. Poppenga
