FOREWORD
Throughout most of my life, I’ve always known that I should have more patience. But wanting something never actually resulted in acquiring it. When I wanted to lose weight, the pounds didn’t vanish by staring in the mirror and calling myself a lazy fatass. They came off with sweat and tears. And so when I decided I wanted to be more patient, years went by while I wanted, wanted, wanted. It wasn’t until I found myself in high-pressure situations that I saw my opportunity to become more patient. When voices were raised and tensions flared, I took deep breaths and many times chose silence as my reply. I responded when I was I was ready, not because I was being coerced or pressured. And when I was expecting something and it wasn’t happening as quickly as I would like, I recalled the leisurely rate at which I would normally respond to other people’s impatience. It made me slow down and be patient myself. It helped me understand the price that comes with patience. Patience takes time. It also takes pressure. It’s easy to be patient when you’re in a calm, relaxing setting. That’ll never help you build your patience. Embrace those “stressful” situations, because those are the ones that help you become more patient. Don’t avoid ignorant and impatient people. Walk right up to them and DEFY them. Your calm, controlled breathing and silence or slow, methodical speech is your declaration of war on the impatient. In time you’ll find that we the Army of Patience do take prisoners, and convert them to our side. Wage your patient war.
Patience,
INTRO
Patience
Patience isn’t something that
You can flip off and on
It can’t be gained with intellect
And can’t be forced with brawn
You can’t use complex formulas
In order to be calm
Logic doesn’t help that much
When folks aren’t in your palm
And muscle won’t change someone’s mind
When they refuse to hear
Instead of building up patience
You’re just instilling fear
So then the question begs to ask
“Just how does one keep cool?
How can I be more patient
Instead of act the fool?”
The answer comes in knowing that
Nothing is instantly
The cost is not with brains or brawn
But time that is the fee
I know that you will likely say,
“I haven’t got the time!”
Because you’re busy focused on
Your own successful climb
But that’s exactly where you’re wrong
So maybe it will aid
To think about it in this way
Of what your time is made
Time’s too big a concept for
People to comprehend
So break it down in smaller parts
To moments that append
You may not have the time to deal
With some kind of distress
But you can spare a moment to
Clean up a person’s mess
No one has the time to put up
With a person’s slip
But give a moment and you’ll see
Your patience start to grip
It may be hard to wait for someone
To get back to you
But give one moment and one more
The more that you accrue
Is directly related
To patience you amass
Benching moments just like weights
And building up your class
So next time someone does you wrong
Or tries to pass the buck
Don’t let yourself get all upset
And start to run amok
Take a moment from your stock
Of time you have to use
‘Cause that’s the price that patience costs
So have you paid your dues?
