“No.” Quorne shook his head. “I am prepared for a struggle, and I shall win it.”
“But what of this menace which is—”
“That is several years in the future. By that time I shall be master of the system and will then devote my energy to solving the problem of this—this Something coming out of space.”
At that moment Viona returned, the child in her arms. The Amazon gave her a steady look.
“My place is with my husband,” Viona said. “And I still see no reason why you should regard him as your enemy.”
“You didn’t hear what he said a moment ago,” the Amazon answered.
Quorne moved his head briefly and, completely obedient, Viona pulled open the airlock with her free hand and stepped outside. Quorne glanced back over his shoulder.
“Where we shall settle I do not know,” he said. “I have no wish to start fighting you any sooner than is necessary, Amazon.”
Then he was gone, leaving the Amazon with her lips tight. Abna gave her a troubled glance.
“I notice it all the time Quorne is with Viona,” he said. “He holds her in complete subjection, which, considering the force of his mind, isn’t surprising. Whilst she was with me in the Twenty-Fifth Plane she was as normal as could be, considering the strangeness of our surroundings.”
“She must go her own way,” the Amazon said. “We have both Quorne and this spatial menace to fight. We had better get home, and think things out.”
