Joel slammed Gribbett in the back, thrusting the older boy forward, and Gribbett tripped over an in-the-way Long John Silver. The map went free. Jasper and Dreyfuss simultaneously leapt for it while Joel tried to keep Blackbeard from chasing after. Gribbett leapt atop Jasper and Dreyfuss and reached his hand down for the map that the two of them were clutching close to their bodies.
“Come on, punks, give ol’Captain Jackie the map!” he said through gritted teeth.
“No!” Jasper and Dreyfuss shouted back in unison. As the littler boys fought with all they had to hold onto the map, they suddenly felt a strange reverberation through their bodies.
“Whoa!” Jasper and Dreyfuss exclaimed, almost simultaneously.
Ellis whacked the pan that had crashed against the door across the side of Gribbett’s head.
“OWWW!” Gribbett roared, immediately reaching up to grab his head while a million stars exploded into his view and letting go of any grip that he had on the map. Keith staggered to his feet and fell headlong into Blackbeard, who was just getting up behind him. As Hook and Kidd closed in on Ellis from behind, Joel scampered to his feet.
“Down, El!” Joel yelled and leapt over Ellis and the other boys. With both arms and both legs extended, he slammed into Hook and Kidd, knocking them off their feet. Ellis helped Joel to his feet, still holding the pan in one hand, then with the other he got ahold of Jasper and Dreyfuss, who still held onto the map. Joel had managed to snatch up the pizza cutter from the floor and held it out toward the pirates while Ellis kept his firm grasp on the pan. But the boys had forgotten Silver, who rolled his body into a ball and thrust himself into their legs from behind, toppling them in their scootch to the exit. Blackbeard seized the advantage, rounding on the boys with a real enough sword that first slapped away the pan and the pizza cutter and ended up pointed directly at Joel’s chest.
“Ah-ah,” Blackbeard said, heaving deep breaths. “You’re a scrappy bunch for kids, I’ll give you that; must be part athlete to be sure,” he went on. He snatched the map from Jasper and Dreyfuss and handed it to a still-reeling Gribbett Keith. He continued, “Now, if you don’t mind, we’ll be on our way!” As the pirates turned to slip away, Joel heard a familiar voice cry out, “Down, mortal!”
The windows over the kitchen counter facing Blackbeard opened and with a gust of wind, the witch Zeldabub, mounted on her broom and accompanied by a guard of huge warlocks also mounted on brooms, flew into the room and headed straight for Blackbeard’s gullet!
