and that ain't usually a good thing. I don't know, maybe some people think differently. That's cool. But how we do things here, it seems to work well. And I wouldn't wanna be anywhere else.

      COP 1

      Have you got rings?

      CLARISSA HOLDS HER WRIST UP.

      CLARISSA

Bracelets. So people know who's legally wed and who's not. Not that it matters. Just so if someone needs to call on a couple for some task they know who to ask. And sometimes we wear the bands outside, just so other people from the Hive - new members perhaps - know who we are. We don't wear diamonds. Diamonds - they're really our intense feelings for one another [2.] [3.]. They exist in the space between us already, even if we can't see them. If I did wear diamonds then I'd have to have a diamond ring on each finger.

      CLARISSA GIGGLES.

      CLARISSA

You know; for each guy I love.

CLARISSA LEANS AGAINST THE BENCH BEHIND HER. SHE SMILES, SHOWS THE BACKS OF HER HANDS TO THE COPS AND WRIGGLES HER FINGERS. THEN SHE STICKS HER THUMBS INTO HER JEANS AND TILTS HER HEAD TO THE RIGHT.

      CLARISSA

Shall I show you down. There's a floor you'll really love. We're in the middle of the country here so we don't see two many sea creatures. But wait 'til you see this floor. Follow me.

CLARISSA STROLLS OVER TO THE ELEVATOR. THE OTHERS FOLLOW.

      COP 1

      Are you in charge, Clarissa?

      CLARISSA

Hardly. We're a group. We share responsibility for the running of the place. I have considerable influence . . . but we don't think of anyone as a leader. This morning, Jaxon was the Native American spiritual advisor who performed the wedding. So he was leader then. Really, the role shifts . . . just like our relationships . . .

CLARISSA PRESSES THE BUTTON BY THE ELEVATOR DOOR.

      COP 2

      This is rather surreal.

      CLARISSA

You say that now? When I'm yet to show you a single floor! Boy, are you guys in for some surprises.

      COP 1

We noticed these dark circles - like half spheres - in the sand outside . . .

CLARISSA NODS. THE ELEVATOR DOORS OPEN. THEY ALL STEP INSIDE.

[3.] Marks, N. A., Lattemann, M., & McKenzie, D. R. (2012). [Abstract: "Nanometer-sized diamond grains are commonly found in primitive chondritic meteorites, but their origin is puzzling. Using evidence from atomistic simulation, we establish a mechanism by which nanodiamonds form abundantly in space in a two-stage process involving condensation of vapor to form carbon onions followed by transformation to nanodiamond in an energetic impact. This nonequilibrium process is consistent with common environments in space and invokes the fewest assumptions of any proposed model. Accordingly, our model can explain nanodiamond formation in both presolar and solar environments. The model provides an attractive framework for understanding noble gas incorporation and explains all key features of meteoritic nanodiamond, including size, shape, and polytype. By understanding the creation of nanodiamonds, new opportunities arise for their exploitation as a powerful astrophysical probe."].       INT. HONEYBEE HIVE - ELEVATOR - DAY

(CLARISSA, SAMANTHA, MATT, COP 1, COP 2)

      CLARISSA

They're sort of like solar panels. We don't usually like to expose ourselves . . . I mean, not to the sky . . .

      CLARISSA SMILES.

      CLARISSA

      But they're totally necessary.

      THE ELEVATOR STARTS MOVING DOWN.

      CLARISSA

Like us right now, light from the sun travels underground. It's collected by those solar satellite-dish-like things, and . . . like a drone . . . the light will enter the queen's lair. Ha ha. No, seriously though; we got optical fibers that carry light from the domes down to almost every level of the Hive [1.] [2.]. Dishes on the ceilings that look like domes also - like the top halves of the spheres outside - are our lights [1.] [2.]. Because of them our hive has light, and we don't need to steal electricity from the grid . . . or, indeed, use any more energy than we need to.

      SAMANTHA

Plus, it's how we keep the plants alive.

      COP 1

      And the plants are . . .?

      SAMANTHA

Pot plants, of course. Ha ha. It's too risky to grow them outside. Unless we lived in Spain [3.]. So we grow them hydroponically [4.]. You know how it is.

      MATT

It really is quite stunning. Samantha showed me the other day.

      COP 2

How long has this hive been here?

      CLARISSA

About 10 years. Our coalition of peace formed not too long after 9/11. No one can fly a plane into an underground hive, right?

      COP 1

      No . . . but planes aren't the problem anymore . . .

      CLARISSA NODS.

THE ELEVATOR COMES TO A STOP.

      SAMANTHA

      We're here.

      SHE LOOKS AT THE COPS.

      SAMANTHA

How familiar are you guys with marine biology?

["Sunlit space underground >>> A group of New York designers plans to transform an underground abandoned tram terminal into a sunlit park using fibre optic technology. The LowLine project wants to breathe life into the terminal by transferring sunlight below ground via cables. "(It) uses a system of optics to gather sunlight, concentrate it, and reflect it below ground, where it is dispersed by a solar distributor dish embedded in the ceiling," the group wrote. The designers, who are fundraising on KickStarter, added: "The light irrigated underground will carry the necessary wavelengths to support photosynthesis - we can grow plants, trees and grasses underground.""]. mX Newspaper, p. 8.
